I always just thought of Mervyn Peake as a fine writer, but he was a great illlustrator as well. He illustrated his own brilliant Gormenghast Trilogy, but I'm particularly fond of his illustrations of Treasure Island, and the Lewis Carroll Alice Books. Here's my copies of his work: - first the Alice books of Lewis Carroll

Now my copies of Peake's work on "Treasure Island". Even more than his work on Alice, I think that these showcase Peake's brilliance. They are the darkest set of illustrations of the novel that I have found, and my absolute favourite.
