Mervyn Peake

I always just thought of Mervyn Peake as a fine writer, but he was a great illlustrator as well. He illustrated his own brilliant Gormenghast Trilogy, but I'm particularly fond of his illustrations of Treasure Island, and the Lewis Carroll Alice Books. Here's my copies of his work: - first the Alice books of Lewis Carroll

The Mad Hatter and the March Hare

Tweedledum and Tweedledee

Alice with the red queen and the white queen

The Cheshire Cat

The Walrus and the Carpenter

Gryphon and Mock Turtle

Wool and Water

Frog Footman

March Hare

Mock Turtle

white Rabbit

Dodo

Mouse from The Pool of Tears

The White Knight

Alice

Now my copies of Peake's work on "Treasure Island". Even more than his work on Alice, I think that these showcase Peake's brilliance. They are the darkest set of illustrations of the novel that I have found, and my absolute favourite.

Treasure Island - Israel Hands plummets to his death

Long Joh Silver - Treasure Island
